Facebook Messenger which was launched last year in December, right after it was leaked, was not supported on the much used Windows Operating system, Windows XP. The Facebook Messenger v2.0 was only compatible with Windows 7. Users of Windows XP did not get to see it in action since it was not compatible with it.
But now Facebook Messenger has been updated to support Windows XP and Windows Vista as well. The launch of Facebook Messenger came in a much unexpected way. The IM was first leaked by a website TechIT, after which Facebook decided to make it officially public. But the messenger was only compatible with Windows 7 only and also many features were not included. You can find more information from here.
Today while using Facebook a pop up appeared which mentioned to download Facebook Messenger for desktop. I was using Windows XP and downloaded it and came to know that the version is compatible with it.
The Facebook Messenger for Windows XP is pretty simple and the UI is same as the previous version including the functionality. Multiple chat with friends, settings and other features are also there. Friend request, messages and Notification can be checked right from the Facebook Messenger. No need to open up your browser. The settings menu is placed right next to the search bar. From settings you can you can go offline or logout. Next to settings is the option to “dock window to right”.
All of the features are same as that of the previous version. The only thing added is the support for Windows XP and Windows Vista. And I noticed that you can add multiple friends to one window i.e Group Chat in Facebook. You can do that by clicking a small settings icon on the top left corner of every chat window you open. That settings menu provides you two options “Add Friends to Chat” and “go offline to friend name”. You can see that in the screen shot below.
So in all the Facebook Messenger is pretty much same. Not much of a difference is noticed. And if you are the one who spend most of the time in the browser just to use Facebook and chat then grab the Facebook Messenger for you Windows XP and Windows Vista copy if you are using any one. You can download the Facebook Messenger for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 from the link below. Let us know how your experience of using Facebook Messenger was.
