We all have participated in numerous debates and discussions about which OS really rules the smartphone segment. One of the major factor which play a very crucial role in deciding the popularity of an OS is the performance of the App Market supported by that operating system.
Apple with iTunes and iOS App Store was first to tap on the real potential this field can generate. Although Nokia had Ovi Store which was the best App Market before Apple but Nokia couldn’t convert all the possibilities it had into reality. Apple was the ultimate leader and the biggest player until Android came into the scene. Launched just months after the release of the iOS App Store, Android Market has recently crossed the 500,000 apps landmark and according to various reports will take over iOS App Store as the biggest App Market by the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012.
Let us first take a look into these various App Market’s we have :
Ovi Store :
Launched in August 2007, Ovi Store was at least year ahead of all the App Market launches. Apple hadn’t introduced iPhone into the market and Android was nowhere to be seen. Everything was fine and there was no real threat and Nokia was assured of its leadership.
Maybe that was the biggest mistake Nokia ever did. Although launched earliest according to various reports Ovi Store is by far one of the smallest App Market in terms of volume. Although developers have better chance to get their app downloaded in the Ovi Store but that is due to such a small market.
With Nokia shifting to Windows Phone 7 , there seems little hope for Ovi Store.
Apple iOS App Store :
Launched on July 2008, iOS App Store was a phenomenal success. On July 10, 2008 Steve Jobs told USA Today that iOS App Store had then just 500 Apps and out of those 25 % were free. About 10 million Apps were downloaded in the first week. The iOS App Store reached the 500 million download on January 16, 2009 and 1 Billion on April 23, 2009. Currently the figure stands at more than 18 billion.
As of now more than 18 Billion apps have been downloaded and still growing. The quality and the fineness Apple brings in its products is clearly seen in its App Store too. iOS App Store by far is the most successful App Market till date.
Android Market :
Android Market was launched on October 2008 merely just three months after the iOS App Store. Although the initial version’s of the Android ROM’s were not considered as serious contenders of the iOS but since Gingerbread and now with Ice Cream Sandwich Android is continually challenging Apple iOS in every terms.
According to a recent report Android has reached more than 500,000 Apps in its Market and is growing at a faster rate than the iOS App Store. With Android itself having a bigger share than iOS in the smartphone OS segment and also hundred’s of Android devices available in the Market it wont be wrong to say that Android Market will soon take over the App Store at least in terms of volume.
Nearly 57 % Apps in the Android Market are free and the Market registered its 6 billion download in July 2011. We however would like to note that the figure must have grown at an exponentially high rate.
Windows Phone MarketPlace :
Now this is one thing that can change everything. Windows Phone along with Nokia are going to form the biggest alliance in the smartphone industry. With the all new Windows Phone 7, Mango already generating such a huge hype we can expect some transfer of share from iOS App Store and Android Market to the Windows Phone MarketPlace.
Launched on 21st October 2010 Microsoft is pitting the all new Metro UI as the game changer for WP 7. Although the volume is very small with just some 34,000 Apps available now. But we would like to note that just today at the Nokia World Event, the smartphone ex-king has announced two real Windows Phone devices the Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710.
As of now we can say that the Apple iOS App Store is the leading App Market in the world with Android running close second and Windows Phone MarketPlace being a threat for both. There are fans and supporters for each and every segment and we are sure you also must have some of your favorites.
