Windows 7 by default does not show your file extensions, it keep them hidden. Though files look good without extension, but it is a risk. For e.g. a virus or worm can be named a importantdocument.doc.exe and you will only see importantdocument.doc, this is because of hidden file extension in windows 7, you might think it is an important document and click on it resulting in infecting your PC.
So it is better to show your files extensions in windows 7, suppose if file extension is enable then the above virus file would appear as importantdocument.doc.exe, where you could have easily identified It is an EXE not word document.
That’s why for safety reasons the file extension in windows should be enabled.
How to Show File Extensions in Windows 7
To show the file extension in windows 7, you need to visit the Folder Options, of which location is change in windows 7, in windows XP Folder options was accessible by going to tools option,but in windows 7 the location is changed
So there are two ways of going to folder option
First – In windows Explorer, Click on Organize then select Folder and Search options, the folder option box will popup
Second – Click on Start menu, in Search box type “Folder Options”, the result will show Folder Options, click on it, the folder option box will popup
Now in the Folder Option, Choose the View tab and in the Advance Settings Pane look for this option
Hide Extension for Known File Types
Just uncheck that option and click apply and then OK,you can see the change is immediate, all file present on your system will show Extensions
Similarly if you want to Hide Extension in windows 7 then at the last step check the option Hide Extension for Known File Types instead of unchecking it, your files will start hiding the extensions
