What goes up should also come down.
Well, it does makes sense and the most obvious law of nature and currently this is what haunts the success of Apple. If we believe current press releases than Apple is more richer than the Government of U.S.A, more wealthier than the total sum of all top 30 banks of Europe (Yes, Europe the continent not a country and we aren’t talking about Africa continent). Currently the most Valuable Company in the World, the leader of Tabloid and Smart phone industry and the inventor of the coolest App store ever (iTunes) everything seems to be going right. It’s going so right that people are speculating that things can only go wrong from now on. This is just an opinion but what may really happen to Apple in the near future is worth imagining.
So lets try to deduce logically about Apple in 2020, but before we look into the future lets try to connect the dots from past.
How Apple got here:
Apple was established on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. Primarily focusing on the manufacturing of MotherBoard based system this Company very soon made its way to the top league with its highly expensive but very efficient series of Apple computers. For many years it continued to develop such computers with basic architecture and without any GUI. Steve Jobs was at the helm and riding the company to the peak of profitability at that point of time. Having made some good and some bad products like Apple I, Apple II and the ill-fated Apple III, it was then that Steve Jobs realized the importance of GUI (Graphic User Interface).
So Apple now concentrated a lot more on developing a GUI for their future computers. The result was Lisa and Macintosh. It was also the phase when there were some differences between Steve Jobs and John Sculley the then C.E.O of Apple which lead to the ouster of Steve Jobs from Apple Computers Inc. Steve Jobs was rather disappointed by this development as he had later said at the Stanford Commencement speech on 2005 that he wondered how he was kicked out of his own company.
Steve Jobs later went ahead to found NeXT Inc and Pixar Animation Studio. Both the companies have had immense success as Pixar Animation now being the world leader in Computer Animation and Imaging. NeXT was later acquired by Apple bringing Steve Jobs back to Apple as an advisor. Later in 1997 Apple suffered huge losses and after the failure of many products like Newton, Performa and many other electrical appliances the board of directors appointed Steve Jobs as the C.E.O again.
Since then there has been no turning back for Apple. With the release of iMac and many other software’s like Mac OS X, iMovie, Final Cut Pro etc. Apple returned to profitability. But this was just the beginning of something massive.
In the year 2001 Apple released iPod the portable digital audio player designed by Jonathan Ive. The product was an instant hit with millions of pieces sold within months and still being the most dominant product in digital audio players. Later on Apple released iTunes store where users could download a song for $ 0.99 each. The music store made millions on a daily basis and billions on the long run.
Just when everything seemed perfect for Apple the next monster was released in the market. Apple released the iPhone in the MacWorld Expo in the year 2007. Needless to say anything more as the success story of iPhone is already a very popular legend Apple was skyrocketed to the top of the Smartphone industry. Today Apple is the biggest manufacturer of Smartphone’s with the largest market share. In the year 2007 along with the release of iPhone Steve Jobs announced in the keynote that Apple Computer Inc will be now known as Apple Inc, primarily focusing on a variety of products and not just computers.
So now that Apple is getting richer day by day and shareholders are farting through silk, we can say miracles happen once, not again and again. Well, Apple defied all laws of miracles and went on to release iPad in 2010, its tablet PC running on the iOS software. Again the device was immense success, again it skyrocketed Apple to the top of tabloid industry blah blah blah………. Wait there are more blahs to come.
On June 2011 Apple introduced iOS 5 and iCloud and even though these products haven’t yet been launched to public we can add some more blahs and blahs to it.
The Future of Apple Inc.
Steve Jobs said that once you look at the docs of your past you can connect them and know what happened and why, but connecting dots for future seems very difficult. Everything is going right for Apple and yes what goes up should come down but we are talking of trends here and not about Apples (the fruit) thrown towards sky. We have reached a very technically advanced stage of civilization now, but does that mean that we will again go back to sticks and stones. World is developing day by day and its not something that can be reversed (unless you expect the universe to start shrinking and time beginning to flow backwards which even if possible is way beyond the point before we should seriously consider it).
Apple has not only created immense wealth and invented great gadgets but what Apple has done is that it has developed the technical aspects to such great heights that erasing its name seems almost impossible.
Mostly when talking of Apple we normally talk about Steve Jobs, but with him or without him, Apple can assure itself the top spot for a long time now, and following are the reasons why I think so.
Focus On User Experience:
Have you ever seen an advertisement about any Apple product you must have noticed that they don’t focus on configuration or specifications. The primary focus has always been on a very productive user experience. People may differ on hardware specs, some like this and some like that but the main target of everything is user satisfaction and an efficient environment. This is where Apple beats everyone despite of some tough completion by some serious contenders.
Innovation The Key :
Consider the iPod, iPhone or the iPad. One thing common about them is the way Apple has created great ideas and marketed them in an amazing manner. They have always been the one who have introduced something in to the market (except for iOS 5 which seems to have something from everything).
Uber Cool and Stylish Products:
Aha, you must have been waiting to read this till now. All Apple products are designed with great aesthetics and awesome looks. This has created a fantastic image of Apple products in the mind of its followers.
Huge and Loyal customer base:
Now lastly but not the least, Apple wont fail.. why ? coz we wont let that happen to it. Apple has such huge base of followers and die-hard fans that they can start a country of their own with Steve Jobs as their president. Do you still have any doubts in your mind?
Now comes the question: What happens when Steve Jobs leaves Apple.
Surely the current C.E.O Steve Jobs won’t be there to captain the ship forever, but he hasn’t been in the crew always too. For many years after the ouster of the tycoon form Apple the company did survive without him. Considering the fact that Apple didn’t do that well in that phase, but it did create some path breaking products which created the base of the company in present.
Also take this point that all those products which have made Apple the most valuable company (iPod, iPhone and iPad) were not invented by Jobs. They were invented by the hardworking and dedicated team of engineers working behind the scene. Steve Jobs as being a public figure due to his so called “hard to deal with” attitude has always been the center of attention. But it’s the engineers and dedicated employees of Apple who make this company what it is at present.
Note this that this doesnt mean that we can predict Apple to be the leader forever. Its like Apple wont fall down but something new will finally emerge to take over the tech world. Remember the only one thing permanent in this world is change….
