The much awaited all new iPad was launched with all its bells and whistles on March 7th and though some speculating about any possible delay but the device will start getting delivered by the week end. This new iPad has been received well by Apple fans and according to Apple the pre-orders are off the charts but one question surely came up in every body’s mind when they first saw the new iPad.. Why no Siri on the new iPad ????…. Well… we can only speculate and the real reason is only familiar to Apple but lets deduce some logical resons as to why the most popular voice assistant ditched the iPad.
Although it is pretty much obvious and inevitable that the Siri will be ported to other versions of iPad, iPhone and may be it will be integrated in the rumored Apple TV but currently the Siri is exclusive only to the iPhone 4S users. No Siri in iPad, No Siri in iPhone 4, No Siri on iPhone 3GS, with such narrow consumer base Siri is still a very sought after feature in other iDevice’s. Many trade gurus have already criticized Apples move to not to include Siri in new iPad and are doubting the ability of the new C.E.O Tim Cook.
This may be one of the most important reason why Apple didn’t include Siri in the new iPad. The iPad unlike the iPhone comes in two variants i.e the Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G + LTE option. The iPhone is permanently connected to a network and has all time data connected which is very crucial for Siri.
All voice commands sent to Siri are actually transmitted to Apple servers and processed and the deduced output is forwarded to the iPhone 4S. Hence any loss is data connectivity will result in total breakdown of Siri. However Apple could had provided Siri on the iPad Wi-fi + 4G variant but that would create a nonuniform specifications of the new iPad which Apple has always traditionally avoided.
However one may argue that the dictation feature introduced in the new iPad also does need data connection and it is still provided but just when it doesn’t detect any data connection the dictation button disappears and hence unavailable. A dictation button getting removed may be forgiven to some extent but if a very pivotal feature like Siri getting disappeared again and again would seem annoying.
Siri Is Still In Beta :
As many know Siri is somewhat an artificially intelligent software and it is still in beta stage. Recently in the iOS 5.1 update the Siri got Japanese added to its functional language. Many languages have still not been added. Siri does a lot of things for its users but still when it comes to performing core functions we have to depend on Touch interface. Hence Apple, maybe, is testing the Siri with a smaller user base of iPhone 4S and hence would later launch the final version when it is polished.
Also Siri accumulates data over time and hence after some time it becomes even more better and efficient. No Siri in new iPad is probably because Apple wanted to make a better Siri available to the iPad users.
iOS 6 and iPhone 5 :
This also may be a very crucial reason for No Siri in iPad. Apple is due to launch iOS 6 and the all new and awesome iPhone 5 this fall. An additional feature of Siri to iPhone 5 which was till than only exclusive to iPhone 4S seems a smart move. Also with iOS 6 finally providing Siri functionality across various devices will create immense popularity for the already popular iOS devices.
However no matter what, by this September / October, iPhone 4S will not be the only device having the Siri. iPhone 5 which will finally the the next generation flagship smartphone by Apple which will feature complete redesign and latest in technology is surely going to have Siri.
Network Constraints :
We all know how much over burdened the current network is. The current user base of iPhone 4S is still comparatively smaller than that of iPhone 4 or iPad 2. Siri needs to be connected to Apple servers and any excessive load to the network may provide delayed response from Siri and hence it will nullify the X factor of the voice assistant.
Apple had also faced a similar issue when it had launched Mobile.Me when the network was not ready to handle such huge number of users and hence crashed every now and then. It will be better to first work on an improved and a stronger network before providing the feature to the consumer base of all Apple products.
With Siri or Without Siri, the all new iPad is a huge success already and the sales is about to break all records. Siri may not be an integral part of iPad right now but it will surely be available in some time in future. The addition of the dictation button on the new iPad is a clear indication of that. Now answering in a little lighter note to the question of Why No Siri on new iPad ??.. Well, isn’t the device awesome already.
