So you are tech enthusiast, an expert in any field and want to become a blogger and you don’t know a heck about blogging. While blogging is surely a very lucrative profession with endless scope for growth, it is also one of the most demanding and consuming profession anyone could be in. There are many things which you should know before you start blogging, lets analyze each segment one by one.
Find Your Niche :
You cant just start up a blog and write about your daily life in it (unless, of course you are celebrity, which I doubt you are). You need to find a niche which you are very good at. Some people start a Travel Blog, some start with a Technology Blog while some start up with Marketing And Finance. You need to find out which field you are good in and specifically in which exact segment.
While starting this Blog we had decided to make up a Technology Blog covering Guides and Tutorials, eventually we found out that Android and iOS are two things we are very good and hence we continued with these specific topics. This is very important step as it will define the core fundamental of your blog.
Setting Up Your Blog :
Now you have found out your Niche and are excited to start your blog. So you want a custom domain or shared ?? , WordPress or Blogger ??, dedicated or shared Server ?? and what not.. There are many technicalities which should be considered before you can actually set up a Blog.
As far those questions are concerned we will try to sort it out one by one :
Shared or Custom Domain :
Shared Domain means you will get a Domain name which wont be completely yours. Normally this happens when you start your Blog in any Blogging website like HubPages, Blogger or BlogSpot etc. You will get a domain name like : GeekPrison.Blogger.Com. While they are free, easy to use and are no set up required process you will not be the complete owner of the Blog.
On the other hand custom Domain is like www.YourName.Com, without any suffix or anything. This gives a much more independent feeling and the readers will also tend to trust these sources. You will have to buy your own Domain Name which can be easily done within $ 10.
Now you have decided to go for a Custom Domain Name and want to start your own blog. You will have to but Web Space from any Web Hosting Providers. Bluehost, GoDaddy and HostGator are some popular Web Hosting providers you can settle for any one.
While there will need for dedicated Web Servers, which means a Server which hosts only your site and no other, but it wont be needed in the beginning. Initially you can settle for any Shared Hosting Plans and Buy a Domain Name and begin Blogging. You can also buy your Domain Name from any hosting service providers. Many Hosting providers like Bluehost provide One Click Installation for WordPress so you do not have to go through the Installation by yourself.
Blogging Platform :
Now consider that you have decided on Custom Domain and you have bought the Web Server Space and you want to start a Blog, you will first have to decide on which Platform you want to host your site. There are many ready made CMS like WordPress, Joomla etc. We at GeekPrison use WordPress and which is also by far one of the most widely used Platform for Bloggers. It is S.E.O friendly, easy to use and also hugely customizable.
Once you decide on WordPress you will also need a Theme to suit your Niche. You can search Google or WordPress to choose from thousand’s of ready made and customizable themes. You can also design your own theme or buy one of your choice. You will also need many plugins to run your Blog properly. Akismet, All-In-One SEO and XML SiteMap are some of the must have plugins we suggest for the beginners.
Running Your Blog :
So now your Blog is up and ready and within an hour it has earned you a thousand dollars… just kidding. While you can say a huge part has been done but the real work starts from now. Setting up a Blog is one thing and running it is completely another. While running the blog you need to have two things in Mind only :
Content Is the King :
Any experienced Blogger must have heard it a thousand times. Content is the undisputed king while it comes to running your Blog. ou must take it this way, ask yourself the question… Why will I visit my Blog ??? If you are able to find many answers than congrats you are doing a pretty good job but if you cant than you need to go back to the think tank part and come up with something new.
Your readers are just like you. They are not Bots or any other non living entity. If you give them interesting and useful information they are bound to come back. While if you just Copy and Paste info from other blogs and you are just putting up anything than chances are you may get visitors to get your Blog up and running.
Also Quality Content must be put up at regular intervals in your Blog. As your site is new and small, most users wont be coming directly to your site. They will be coming from Google and other Search Engines. So a good ranking in the search engine will ensure good traffic. But for Google or any other search engine to give you a good Page Rank you need to first gain the trust of Google.
For that you need to update you site regularly and keep it updated. It does not matter of you post one article a day or one article a week but just make it regular and do not keep your site idle for a long time. Also if you are not updating your site daily than ensure that the quality of your Posts are good enough to make up for the quantity thing.
If Content in the King than no doubt S.E.O is the queen. S.E.O means Search Engine Optimization. SEO is one of the most important factors which will define the traffic to your blog. As mentioned earlier, visitors will be driven to your traffic from search engines. So you should make sure that your Blog ranks well for the niche it is.
SEO will mainly depends on three things : Keywords, Backlinks and Time. Your articles should be Keyword optimized which means important Keywords should be mentioned appropriately in all sections of your post. Backlinks are also very important for increasing your Page Rank. Many Webmasters tend to get obsessed with it and end up in a buying spree of backlinks for their Blog. There are also many things that are crucially necessary while gaining backlinks. The Backlink form a high PR is of much more value and also the backlink should exist in a site which is of your same niche.
According to me the best backlinks are those which you are not aware of and are not responsible for. Create awesome content that will make other Webmasters point to your Blog. Guest Posting is also a very efficient way to get traffic and Back links.
You can also argue that why guest post when we can just Comment below and gain a Back link. Well all the links in the Comment section are actually having “NoFollow” tag which is having very less weight age for Google while the Back links mentioned in the Post are having “DoFollow” tags which are in return having a very high weight age for Google.
Remember Quality is the key and not Quantity.
Patience and Consistence :
While we have now covered almost all technical field there are also certain ethics every Blogger must imbibe. Blogging is a very slow process. While Google will take months to index your Blog properly and place it at a favorable position. Which means that for months your Blog will not produce any profit for you. It will take at least 6 months for any Blogger to get the first cheque from Google Adsense.
Consistence is also as much important as patience. You cannot leave your Blog idle for days. We people get very much inspired by results and also equally discouraged by the absence of it. Keep posting quality content at a regular rate and wait for few months and you could become the next big thing in Blogging. It is actually observed that Blogging is a very high paying profession but also very few percent of the Bloggers get some money. This is the main reason why.
So keep up the Good Work and have Patience.
