Step 1 : Go to Settings and scroll down and tap on Messages.
Step 2 : Flip the ON/OFF right next to the iMessage to toggle it On.
Once you do this iMessage will automatically extract your Apple ID and phone number for iPhone usersand also integrate with your contacts.
For iPhone and iPad users they may have to enter their Apple ID manually for the iMessage to work. The Apple ID is the same which we all use to login to iTunes. If you do not have one you can do so by going to “Create New Account”.
Along with numbers and Apple ID you can also integrate E-Mail ID along with it. To add an E-Mail ID just tap on Add Another Email… and add the address manually in Contacts.

How To Use iMessage For iOS 5 iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch :
Once you have setup iMessage on your device you do not have to go any option or tap any other Icon. The iMessage will integrate it self with the Message App and send the messages automatically.
So whenever you are sending a message just go to the familiar Message App and compose the message and send the SMS or the MMS. The only requirement is that the person to whom you are sending the message should also have an iOS 5 device. Rest Apple figures out everything for you.
